Holistic Pediatric Training
Weekend Seminars 2008
The Holistic Pediatric Training seminars conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area are
designed to provide clinicians with an integrated program that conveys the concepts and skills necessary to treat children from a holistic perspective. Practitioners who want to expand their practices to treat
children can now receive the training they need to become effective and confident child health care providers. Acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, and homeopaths can develop confidence in diagnosing
pediatric medical problems and managing children's illnesses, as well as gaining a more comprehensive perspective on the holistic pediatric principles. Seminar instructors are leading experts in the field of
holistic pediatrics and practitioners with many years experience in teaching, writing, and clinical practice.
The seminar schedule includes a weekend seminar on pediatric physical exams designed for acupuncturists and others who
need more training in pediatric diagnosis, and a weekend seminar in holistic principles applied to well child care and general primary care pediatrics. Also on the schedule is a weekend comprised of two 1-day
seminars – one on acute illness and alternatives to antibiotics and another on management of pediatric asthma.
Pediatric Functional Medicine is a new seminar that provides attendees with the principles of biochemical
individuality applied to pediatric care. Pediatrician Elisa Song will explain the use of lab tests, botanical medicines, nutritional support, and pharmacological treatment options applied to children with asthma,
eczema, ADHD, GI disease. She will also define the role of leaky gut syndrome in the production of allergies, and elucidate the diagnostic and treatment plan for these children.
We are very excited to host two seminars in Five Phase Constitutional Chinese medicine and pediatrics, taught by Efrem
Korngold OMD, co-author of Between Heaven and Earth.
You can see the schedules and register for all of these seminars at http://www.healthychild.com. Practitioners can attend individual seminars or the entire
series. Student discounts available. Members of the Holistic Pediatric Association will receive a substantial discount on each seminar.
This is a tremendous opportunity to learn holistic pediatrics from some of the world's leading authorities and
educators in this field.
Online Consultation
In conjunction with Holistic Pediatric Training we also offer a free online pediatric consultation forum and discussion
group for pediatric practitioners through our Yahoo Group. Practitioners who have questions about their treatment of children now have access to expert pediatric practitioners. This interactive consortium of
pediatric acupuncturists, pediatricians, and other pediatric professionals is dedicated to increasing the ability of all practitioners to treat children, gain confidence in the management of children's cases, and
provide peer support for difficult pediatric cases.

- Caring for the whole child's mental, emotional, and physical health
- Constitutional and acute care principles
Nutrition (food and supplements)
Well child visits, developmental pediatrics, learning styles
Vaccine Choices
This seminar introduces the materials and methods for developing a holistic pediatric practice. We
will cover protocols for well-child care from birth through early childhood, and management principles for chronic and acute illness using an integrative holistic model. Holistic principles are applied to nutrition,
parenting, anticipatory guidance, and immune system development. This seminar is suitable for physicians, nurses, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and other primary health care providers. Attendees will be exposed to
the practical principles for providing holistic pediatric care.
Holistic care as presented in this seminar brings together the concepts of science, evidence-based
practice, Chinese medicine, and homeopathic philosophy to the subjects of nutrition, vaccination, management of illness with natural treatment modalities, and children's emotional and spiritual well-being.
Materials covered in the seminar include:
flowsheets for patient charts, and topics for each well-child visit
the use of holistic treatment methods for the management of acute and chronic illness
guidelines for nutrition in children at the different developmental stages
integration of holistic pediatrics with conventional pediatrician care
the use of parent education materials and informed consent for vaccine decisions
discussion of safety issues around toxic exposure of children to pesticides, home cleaning products,
and environmental toxins in water, toys, and other household products.

Pediatric Functional Medicine 14 hours
April 26
Elisa Song MD
Functional medicine is a science-based field of health care that is grounded in the principles of
biochemical individuality, patient-centered care, dynamic balance of internal and external disease factors, web-like interconnections of physiological factors, health as a positive vitality, and promotion of organ
reserve.
Functional pediatrics looks at how the unique genetic predisposition with which each child is born
interacts with the physical, emotional, and spiritual factors to which that child is exposed. Taking into account everything that is put into a child's body (from the food they eat, the air they breathe the
water the drink, the thoughts they think, and the toxins they're exposed to), functional pediatrics explores how these interface with biochemical individuality to manifest as each child's specific expressions of
wellness or illness. Understanding and learning to use the functional medicine matrix is a powerful way for pediatric healthcare providers to assist children and their families on their road to optimal health.
Day One will explore the guiding principles of Functional Medicine. Included in this
discussion will be a review of the Functional Medicine Matrix, when and how to use a variety of functional laboratory tests, along with pharmacological, botanical, and nutritional treatment options. Day Two
will review functional approaches to various childhood disorders (asthma, eczema, ADHD, gastrointestinal disease, autoimmune illness), along with specific studies, and allow participants an opportunity to discuss
cases of their own.
Chinese Medicine Module
Fundamentals of Five Phase Constitutional Medicine and Pediatrics 7 hours
March 8
Efrem Korngold OMD
The seminar will be in two parts, morning and afternoon. In the morning we will discuss the
derivation and clinical application of the Five Constitutional-Character Types according to the logic of Five Phase Theory. This will include a slide presentation, an interactive exercise and, if time permits, one
or two case illustrations. In the afternoon portion, we will discuss the application of the Five Types method to describing and understanding child development and constitutional typing in children. This will also
include a slide presentation in which we will construct and deconstruct our methodology followed by a discussion of a few selected cases from my practice and cases brought in by the seminar's participants.
Participants will be expected to bring at least one, and preferably two, write-ups of pediatric patients and/or write-ups of their young relatives or their own children. There will be an online form that can be
downloaded for submitting case histories.
Advanced Perspectives in Five Phase Constitutional Pediatrics 7 hours
May 17
Efrem Korngold OMD
This seminar will hopefully provoke a wide ranging discussion of Chinese medicine pediatrics in the
context of constitutional types as a methodology for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and nurturance of healthy growth and development. I will begin the morning discussion by illustrating my approach in a few of my
own clinical cases, but participants will be expected to bring write-ups of their own patients for the afternoon portion. However, we will not perform actual treatment, recommend therapy or give advice to parents
during the seminar, unless the parents also happen to be seminar participants.
